Sunday Tweetup – All the way, from Birmingham, UK

Hey Folks!

We’ve got a special treat! A Tweep and blogger, Fiona Cullinan, is traveling to SXSWi and couldn’t pass up on the chance to visit the other “Birmingham” while she was in the states. Since she’s just passing through, she’ll only be here Sunday, March
7th. We’re going to meet up at On Tap Sports Bar starting at about 5pm (Google Map Here)

This is really a great opportunity to have a chance to see how our friend in “Brum” (Birmingham, UK) are using blogging, twitter, and other Social Media tools! Can’t wait to see you there!!!

Marketing to the Modern Mom – Thursday Oct. 8th

David Griner and crew over at Luckie are hosting a great panel over at the Virginia Samford Theatre on (you guessed it) Marketing to the Modern Mom. David and crew have brought in blogging moms and marketers to help you and your business connect with web savy Moms.

And I hear that if you put in the code “FRIENDOFWADE” you get $10 off… and a hug from local blogger/writer/editor Wade Kwon (made that last part up, no hug guaranteed)

The Tuesday after… #nmatl, For Social Media People, Not By Social Media People

Wow! What a weekend of Social Media goodness. I honestly wish I could have done more (not that 2 conferences isn’t enough), but alas, I’m only one person. So, let’s get to it, shall we?

New Media Atlanta – For Social Media People, Not By Social Media People

Friday morning at about the butt-crack of dawn, I jumped into the car with @briancauble, @andreafwalker, and @joshgrenon for a little road trip goodness. As the anointed driver of the group (voted most awake and most caffeinated), I navigated us (via GPS) to GaTech for New Media Atlanta.

First think I must say about #nmatl is that it was well organized. But from the time that I walked into the lecture hall it was being held in, I knew it wasn’t going to go well. It immediately reminded me of a quote that I had recently hear from one of those big named social media folks

The difference between an audience and a community is which direction the chairs are pointing.

Now, having been to #soso in August, (not nearly as well organized as #nmatl) I realized that while the people who ran #nmatl may use Social Media, but I seriously doubt that they are Social Media people.

#soso focused on interaction, not just lecture. Granted we grouped together to hear @ajkeen and @mideastyouth, but most of the conference were tag-team sessions that promoted more discussion than lecture. One great example was where @jasonfalls and @RichardAtDell discussed creating a Social Media strategy and asked the audience the question while guiding the conversation. Kudos to those guys for a great session and the organizers of #soso for using that format.

Now I realize that most of the people in attendance were marketers (a live pole was done via text) and that marketers are used to the “bullhorn”. But, social media is about interaction, discussion, networking, etc. And I quite frankly feel that I didn’t get that kind of value from #nmatl. The biggest takeaway from the conference is that I won’t be back next year if they don’t change the format.

With the exception of Brogan. Hearing Brogan was worth the price of admission. Just wish I had known that a week ago, and I would have planned to go listen to him in Nashville.

Now, don’t think I’m spiteful. I think that #nmatl is a great idea and would benefit from some tweaking of the format. I’m hopeful that the organizers will listen to the feedback (hopefully they are hearing the same feedback that I have been) and change the format of the conference. Atlanta has a great deal of marketers, PR people, companies, conference space, etc. Essentially, all the ingredient to make #nmatl nationally recognized as the place to be for Social Media Pros.

I think a lot of people will be interested to see what happens next year.

Barcamp Mobile: 3 things that I took away…

1) Birmingham is a leader on the Social Media Scene – Now, that’s not to take anything away from the Mobile community. However, many people there were not even on Twitter, which is a staple in the Birmingham Social Media Community. But the important thing is that people want to build that community (via the tech community), much like Birmingham has built it’s community.

2) Great People, Better Ideas – I was floored by the amount of great people and the ideas they are making a reality. Just take a look at @ivey and his idea for a twitter payment system. I can’t wait to see all the great things that will come out from @barcamp_mobile!

3) A state-wide Barcamp? Now that needs to be a 2 day event! – I’ve seen just a couple of posts on Twitter about it but what about a #barcampbama. What do you think? Held in Montgomery, two-day event where people come together for great networking, converstation, and ideas. This could help Alabama become one of the “hotspots” in the Social Media space…

Is Social Media the trendy thing to do?

@sheconomy asked people to head over to She-Conomy and answer her poll question: Do you think Social Media Marketing is just a trend?

Here’s my take…

No way, no how. Why? Andre said it best when he said to me, it’s not about the bullhorn, it’s about the conversation. That means that more and more companies are realizing that they need to listen to the feedback given by customers through the channels that the customers want to give feedback through. Sorry, Mr. Executive, emails and website contact pages just don’t cut it anymore. We live in a society of “on-demand”. And the next generation is demanding to be talked to through services like Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, Youtube, Vimeo, etc. And these services are becoming more and more well establish, even ingraining themselves into our pop culture. I mean, I’ve seen more commercials recently (and I don’t watch a lot of TV) about Twitter than I think I’ve ever seen about facebook, youtube, and myspace combined. The fact of the matter is marketing to the next generation will take more of a mixed-media approach with your PR & marketing people looking in the other direction. That’s right they just aren’t pounding out graphics, they are listening and are in on the conversation. Whether Mr. Executive likes it or not…

We’re presenting!!! Podcasting @ Barcamp Birmingham May 2nd

Social Media, The Great State of Alabama, and information accessibility

Our state department could learn a thing or two from social media about information accessibility. Some already have. I have a permanent vision of Gov. Riley on a motorcycle via twitter. Artur Davis is making his bid for the governer’s seat with Twitter as a tool of communitcation. And don’t even get me started about the elected Birmingham officials on Myspace and Facebook.

But I’m not talking about access to our officials. They are supposed to be accessible to the public to give lip service. No, I’m talking about your local branch of the DMV.

Yes. Here recently I went to the Centerpoint branch to get my tag transfered from my poor old wrecked car to my bright shinny new one. I went 3 times and spent a total of 4.5 hours in line. Now, don’t get me wrong. I kept my cool. But it would have been a lot better if I could have actually found the information I needed about who should sign what, the dreaded and/or disaster, and what wreckage papers are needed.

Now, I don’t think SM is the end/all, be/all to this problem. Simply having someone go through the line every 20-30 minutes making sure people have the exact paperwork exactly how it needs to be filled about would be the best solution if the Great State of AL is going to be so damn picky. But an actual website that explains everything (and not the vaugeness that is there now) would be really appreciated. Ideally, (which means it will never happen) would be a twitter/AIM/google talk account that would be manned that people could ask specific questions. Like the dreaded and/or on the title. Grr.
